GMRSC launches Super Lap Series to curb road speeding

The Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMRSC) will launch its 2026 Super Lap Series as part of an effort to promote road safety and expand grassroots motorsport.

The Time Attack championship is intended to provide an alternative to speeding on public roads by allowing drivers to compete in a controlled environment at the South Dakota Circuit.

Executive member Luis Kumar said the initiative aims to move high-speed driving off public highways and into a safe setting, adding that the circuit is the only place where competitors should be driving at full intensity.

The series will include a Pro Street class targeted at everyday drivers, with competitors racing against the clock rather than each other. Organisers said the no-contact format, which eliminates wheel-to-wheel racing, reduces the risk of collisions and allows participants to use daily-driven vehicles.

To maintain a grassroots focus, cars in this class must retain full interiors, with stripped-out race cars prohibited. Safety requirements will be limited to an FIA-certified helmet and a factory three-point seatbelt, with no roll cage required.

Motorcycles will also be included in the Super Lap Series. Rider and executive member Alain Hopkinson said the time attack format will cater to three distinct motorcycle groups, providing riders with a controlled environment in which to test their skills and machinery against the clock.

The series is designed as an entry point for newcomers to motorsport, with participants sharing pit facilities with more experienced drivers and riders, creating opportunities for informal mentoring on vehicle setup and driving techniques.

An Unlimited Group will also be offered for advanced competitors, allowing unrestricted builds for fully prepared track machines.
The 2026 Super Lap Series will be contested over three rounds, scheduled for February 15, August 16 and November 22. Organisers said further details on participation and registration will be released at a later date.
