An 89-year-old woman was found dead at her home on the East Coast Demerara, police said on Tuesday, as they launched an investigation into a suspected homicide.
The victim, identified as Lackandai Tamessar, a pensioner of Ogle Airstrip Road, was discovered lying motionless with what appeared to be stab wounds when a relative visited her residence on December 30, police said. Investigators believe the killing occurred sometime between the afternoon of December 26 and early afternoon on December 30.
Police said Tamessar was last seen alive on December 26 when the same relative visited her.
She was taken to the Plaisance Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty. Her body was later transferred to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is pending.
An 88-year-old man, identified as the woman’s husband and who was present at the residence at the time, has been arrested and is being questioned as part of the investigation, police said.
Investigations are continuing.
