Massive rail transit system under consideration

The government is exploring options for a large-scale rail transit system as part of its five-year transport infrastructure agenda.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said the initiative aims to ease congestion in Georgetown and facilitate the movement of cargo from Lethem to Guyana’s Atlantic coast.

“In this regard, we are evaluating possible options for a mass transit system, especially to ease congestion in Georgetown, as well as to move cargo from Lethem to Guyana’s Atlantic coast,” he announced at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).

Earlier this year, Ali said the Ministry of Housing was conducting a feasibility study for the project. He emphasised that the rail system is part of a broader plan to create a modern, well-connected Guyana, improving access to opportunities for communities, including those in remote and hinterland areas.
