Preparatory work commences on $4.6 billion Moruca Regional Hospital

Excavation works have started at the site of the Moruca Regional Hospital in Region One, marking a major expansion of healthcare services for hinterland communities.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony toured the site and outlined the advanced facilities and services planned for the new hospital. The project is valued at $4.6 billion.

The 50-bed hospital will include an Accident & Emergency Department, pharmacy, modern laboratory, and an imaging suite equipped with X-ray and CT scan capabilities. It will also feature operating theatres for routine and complex surgeries, intensive care units for adults and children, and a specialised delivery suite. Inpatient rooms will be limited to five beds each, with a private toilet and bath.

Land clearing has begun

Specialised departments for ophthalmology, audiology, and dentistry will be included, along with an on-site oxygen plant to support local production and reduce reliance on imports—an issue highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anthony said the hospital represents a major upgrade to regional healthcare infrastructure.

“This facility will transform healthcare delivery in the region. From advanced diagnostics and surgical capabilities to comfortable inpatient accommodations, the Moruca Regional Hospital will set a new standard for healthcare services in hinterland communities,” he said.

The Ministry of Health said it remains committed to improving access to quality healthcare nationwide, ensuring hinterland residents receive the same standard of care as those in urban centres.
