The Stabroek Market area is being beautified with a new public space modelled on the area opposite the Parliament Buildings, designed to be fully accessible to vendors, shoppers, and commuters.
The project is being led by the Ministry of Local Government.
The space will feature raised flooring, park benches, decorative elements, and a performance area for artistes.
The ministry stressed that no vendors from the Stabroek Market are being relocated, as construction is taking place in a currently unused section.
The work is expected to take just under two weeks. The ministry said the space will provide a safe, relaxing environment and help boost sales during the Christmas season — a goal that aligns with the broader Georgetown City Revival Plan to restore and beautify the capital.
Under the revival plan, Georgetown is set to be transformed into a sustainable “Garden City,” with upgrades to drainage, roads, pavements, recreational and heritage spaces, and the modernisation of waterfronts, markets, and public‑space infrastructure.
The new Stabroek public space thus forms part of the city’s renewal efforts, aimed at improving urban aesthetics, preserving heritage, enhancing commercial activity, and creating a more vibrant, accessible capital.
