Guyana and Belize showcased their climate resilience partnership over the weekend at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, with a focus on uniting efforts under Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and REDD+ initiatives.
Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn, led the Guyana delegation at the Caribbean Climate Action Showcase: Building Climate Resilience in Belize & Guyana—Uniting NDCs & REDD+ for Transparent Partnerships. The high-level event highlighted Caribbean climate leadership while emphasising financing needs and partnership opportunities for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Minister Benn delivered a presentation on Guyana’s implementation of the Nationally determined Contributions and Guyana-Norway REDD+ partnership and carbon market engagement. A joint video featuring stories from both Guyana and Belize set the tone for a powerful, regionally unified message, a release said.
A ministerial panel explored progress, gaps, and opportunities in climate action, including discussions on NDC implementation, carbon markets, and access to climate finance. Donors and private-sector representatives shared financing windows and investment opportunities, supporting Caribbean nations in unlocking resources for adaptation, mitigation, and resilience-building.
The showcase emphasised strengthening regional collaboration, expanding international support, and forging new partnerships. Following the forum, Belize and Guyana plan broader engagement through potential dual events in both the Blue and Green Zones, youth participation, and an accompanying media campaign.
Additional deliverables from the showcase include a policy brief, a showcase booklet, and a summary report outlining regional financing gaps.
As climate change intensifies across the Caribbean—bringing rising sea levels, stronger storms, and severe flooding—Belize and Guyana face unique but similar vulnerabilities, particularly among large indigenous and rural populations whose livelihoods depend heavily on natural resources.
