In a thrilling conclusion to the Courts Optical Pee-Wee Football Championship, Leonora Primary edged out St John the Baptist in a dramatic sudden-death penalty shootout, claiming the prestigious title at the Ministry of Education Ground on Saturday evening.
The final showcased two first-time contenders fiercely battling for glory, captivating fans with their determination and skill. The match began in a high-energy atmosphere, as Leonora’s Jonathan Melvin scored an electrifying goal in the 17th minute, giving his team an early lead.
The tension escalated when St John the Baptist fought back, earning a penalty late in the second half, which Aaron Christian calmly converted in the 55th minute, levelling the score at 1-1. With neither team able to secure a victory in regular or extra time, the match moved into a nerve-wracking penalty shootout. In a dramatic finish, Leonora triumphed 6-5, igniting celebrations among their fans and solidifying their place in youth football history.
The championship also highlighted several standout performers, with Jonathan Melvin named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Aaron Christian recognised as the Highest Goal-Scorer with 12 goals throughout the tournament. Akeem Johnson from Leonora was honoured as the Best Goalkeeper.
