Orealla steps into the spotlight

In the heart of Region Six lies the small Amerindian community of Orealla, now poised to welcome visitors like never before.

From November 14 to 16, the village will host a three-day safari tourism experience, marking a significant milestone for community-based tourism in Guyana’s hinterland.

Speaking at the opening of the Berbice Exposition and Trade Fair, Minister of Tourism Susan Rodrigues highlighted the importance of the event for Orealla and the wider region.

“From November 14 to 16, the Orealla Safari will offer visitors a journey into this small Amerindian community. This is the type of community-driven tourism we are passionate about — where local communities benefit, employment opportunities are created, creativity is showcased, and visitors can immerse themselves in our rich cultural heritage, cuisine, and hospitality. It is a truly unique Guyana tourism experience,” she said.

Minister Rodrigues framed the safari as more than a tour; it is a chance for Orealla to share its culture and way of life while generating economic opportunities.

“These are not isolated projects. Together, they position Region Six not only as a business hub but also as a leading tourism destination in Guyana.”

For a community whose daily rhythms are shaped by the river and local traditions, the safari offers an unprecedented spotlight. Visitors will do more than sightsee — they will experience Orealla’s life, cuisine, hospitality, and creative spirit firsthand.

The minister also noted ongoing support from the Office of the First Lady and the regional administration, citing growing visitor arrivals through the Moleson Creek Port — over 6,300 in just the first six months of the year. “As we continue to build infrastructure and capacity, those numbers will only rise,” she said.

By welcoming visitors through the Orealla Safari, the village positions itself at the forefront of community-driven tourism in Region Six.
