Thirteen-year-old Davie Nirdhan from Region Three is fighting for her life as her family struggles to secure funds for specialised overseas treatment for leukaemia. For more than a year, Davie has been in and out of hospitals, with local medical options no longer sufficient to manage her worsening condition.
Her mother, Bibi Zulikarmoguan, said the past year has been emotionally and physically exhausting as she watched her daughter battle complications, including pneumonia and kidney issues.
“Since last July, she sick and she been in hospital for 133 days. They try with she. Then tell me the treatment now ain’t work and she have to go overseas. But I not giving up. I still deh pushing with she,” she said, holding back tears.
Davie’s condition has deteriorated during extended stays at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she spent more than 130 days admitted. Doctors have now advised that she requires treatment at a paediatric oncology centre abroad — a level of care that her family cannot afford on their own.
Recently, members of the Guyana Pandit Mission, led by Pandit Somnauth Sharma,Pandit Balbadar, Pandit krishna Patiram and Pandit Ubraj Narine, visited the family, offering a small financial donation and urging the public to come forward with assistance.
“We are here to make a small contribution, and to ask others to help,” Pandit Somnauth said.
He added: “This child is suffering from leukaemia. I know how hard it is. Whatever you can give will go toward saving her life. Your help will never go in vain.”
Zulikarmoguan is seeking support to cover the costs of medical evaluations, airfare, accommodation, and overseas treatment. Despite the overwhelming financial burden, she remains steadfast in faith and determination.
“Every day is a prayer. I just want to see my child live,” she said.
Those who wish to assist can contact Davie’s mother directly at +592 696-3381. The family is also appealing to the public to share their story to help reach someone who might be able to assist.
