Local Government and Regional Development Minister Priya Manickchand said on Wednesday that no parent should have to endure the loss of a child under such tragic circumstances. She made the remark during a visit to the family of 15-year-old Navindra Mahes, who was killed after being struck by a vehicle earlier in the day.
Manickchand met Navindra’s mother, Vimlawattie Arjun, at their home, offering condolences and government support. The minister was accompanied by Pandit and Parliamentarian Suresh Singh, Region Four Chairman Clemsford Belgrave, Vice Chairman Deoraj Nauth, and several Regional Democratic Council and Neighbourhood Democratic Council members.
Navindra’s father died six years ago, leaving his mother to raise him and his younger sister, now six. Due to financial difficulties, Arjun had sent her son to live with relatives in Berbice, where he excelled academically and topped his class at the National Grade Six Assessment. When her situation improved, she brought him back home and arranged for him to attend school on the East Coast instead of Georgetown.
Manickchand and the accompanying officials pledged ongoing assistance to the family.
