US$1M project to help farmers, agro-processors boost output

A US$1 million project funded by the Government of India is set to help Guyanese farmers and agro-processors through the upgrade and modernisation of the New Guyana Marketing Corporation’s (GMC) Central Packaging Facility at Sophia.

The initiative, implemented under the Quick Impact Development Project (QIDP), will install automated processing equipment for fruits, vegetables, and coconuts to enhance efficiency and productivity in the agro-processing sector.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha met on Monday with a delegation from NABCONS (NABARD Consultancy Services) and officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs to discuss the project’s implementation.

Minister Mustapha welcomed the partnership, saying the investment “aligns with the government’s broader agenda to expand value-added production, improve food safety standards, and enhance Guyana’s capacity to access regional and international markets.”
