The $2.6 billion state-of-the-art Hosororo Secondary School complex in Region One (Barima-Waini) is on track for completion in January 2026.
According to a release, a Ministry of Education delegation has met with contractors and inspected ongoing works at the facility, which is being built to accommodate 800 students from communities across the North West Region.
“The complex… is quite a massive complex that is going to comfortably hold 800 students,” Education Minister Sonia Parag said during the visit.
To ensure the project remains on schedule, she set several short-term deadlines, particularly for electrical installation and completion of the teaching blocks. Within the next two weeks, one of the two teaching blocks—each comprising five buildings—is expected to be completed and ready for intake.
“Two of these buildings will be fully completed by November 7th,” Parag stated, adding that the goal is to “transition students as fast as possible into the new buildings so that they can be in a comfortable space.”
The complex will feature modern amenities, including laboratories, a dining area, and specialised facilities for Science, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Information Technology, Home Economics, and Industrial Technology.
Parag also inspected the modern living quarters designed to accommodate up to 30 teachers.
“We want to be able to have our teachers as well in comfortable conditions,” she said, highlighting the importance of teacher accommodation for staff retention.
A dedicated dormitory to house about 350 students is projected to be fully operational by December. Initially, approximately 400 students are expected to occupy the completed sections of the school.
“We are looking to have the entire building all of the buildings be ready by the end of December,” Parag said, adding: “Then we want to be able to move all of the students into the various buildings by January for the January to April term or Easter term.”
Essential services such as running water, electricity, proper plumbing, and washroom facilities are being prioritised. A well is being constructed to serve the entire complex, and the Ministry is working with Guyana Water Incorporated to have it operational within a month. A reservoir is currently being used for water supply.
Parag reaffirmed the commitment to meeting the completion deadline. “The contractors have given their commitment to completing the project on time, which is the 24th of January 2026,” she said. She also confirmed plans for an interim visit to monitor progress on short-term goals.
The visiting team included Permanent Secretary Shannielle Hoosein-Outar, Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain, Deputy Chief Education Officer (Administration) Tiffany Harvey, Deputy Chief Education Officer (Amerindian and Hinterland Education Development), and Assistant Chief Education Officer – Secondary, Sherwyn Blackman.
