The first 100 three-bedroom homes at the Palmyra Housing Scheme in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) are nearing completion and are expected to be ready for residents to move in before Christmas.
During an inspection of the site, Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal confirmed the progress
“100 of these three-bedroom houses are under construction. We have about 20 that are complete and the others are at about 80 to 90 percent completion. Within another month or so, then all will be finished. We have already started the allocation about 50 per cent of these already allocated.”
The ministry explained that the homes are being built using modular, production-line construction techniques, which are expected to speed up delivery and reduce costs while maintaining quality. Each unit, inclusive of land, is priced at approximately $13.5 million and comes fully fitted with utilities.
“These houses are based on the tendered price it’s $13.5 million. The internal pipe network and electricity are in, and the water treatment plant will be connected. By and large, all those persons here will be moving into their homes before Christmas,” Minister Croal added
The Palmyra project is a key component of the government’s strategy to shift citizens from land-allocation only models to full home ownership. In this first phase, the three-bedroom homes are being offered through pre-qualification and on-site allocation processes, with approximately half already allocated. Officials say the model of faster construction, lower mortgage rates, and integrated infrastructure will be replicated nationally to help clear the housing backlog.
Minister Croal also announced that a new Project Monitoring Unit will be established to enhance oversight of future phases, which will include homes tailored for young professionals. The broader development at Palmyra is being positioned as a “mini-city” with residential and commercial activity, supported by land-preparatory works exceeding $7 billion.
