The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has summoned Jennifer Ally to appear before it after she allegedly made racially charged statements on social media.

In a statement, the Commission said it “notes with deep concern the recent racially charged statements circulated on social media by Ms. Jennifer Ally who was previously cautioned for similar conduct.”

The ERC described the remarks as “divisive, offensive, and contrary to the spirit of respect and harmony that the Commission continues to advocate across all communities in Guyana.” It reminded citizens that freedom of expression carries responsibilities, particularly in ensuring that public statements made online do not incite ethnic tensions or undermine social cohesion.

Citing Article 146 (3) of the Constitution of Guyana, the ERC noted that freedom of expression “does not relate to hate speeches or other expressions, in whatever form, capable of exciting hostility or ill-will against any person or class of persons.”

The Commission said it has issued a summons requiring Ally to appear before the ERC at 11 am on October 23, 2025, to respond to renewed allegations of racially insensitive remarks. It warned that failure to comply would result in “appropriate action as provided for under the relevant laws of Guyana”.

Reaffirming its stance, the ERC said “racial hostility in any form has no place in Guyanese society,” and urged citizens to use social media responsibly, speak out against intolerance, and promote unity.

“The Ethnic Relations Commission remains committed to fostering a society where mutual respect and understanding form the foundation of national harmony,” it added.
