The smallest flame, lit with sincerity and devotion, has the power to dispel gloom and remind people that goodness needs no extravagance to shine brightly.
This was the reminder from President Dr. Irfaan Ali in his Diwali message to the nation, as he extended heartfelt wishes to all Guyanese, particularly members of the Hindu community, on the occasion of the Festival of Lights.
The President said Diwali is a timeless celebration that embodies the triumph of light over darkness and goodness over evil, while calling on citizens to reflect on its enduring lessons of unity, compassion, and renewal.
Diwali is one of the world’s oldest and most beloved festivals. Its origins reach deep into the soil of ancient India, where it began as a harvest celebration marking the end of the agricultural year and the beginning of a new season of hope and renewal.
According to the President, the festival’s message of moral strength and devotion transcends time and faith, symbolising the eternal victory of righteousness and truth. Diwali, he noted, has evolved into a universal celebration of hope and light, one that unites people across religious and cultural boundaries.
Dr. Ali reflected on the history of the festival in Guyana, recalling that it arrived with the Indian indentured immigrants who brought with them their languages, foods, songs, and religious traditions. Over generations, what began as private observances in homes blossomed into a public celebration of devotion, culture, and community spirit.
“Today, Diwali in Guyana is more than a religious observance. It has become a national celebration. Homes are illuminated with flickering diyas, motorcades are held to usher in the festival, and families gather to pray and share sweets. People of every background join in acts of goodwill and generosity.”
The Head of State urged citizens not to lose sight of Diwali’s deeper meaning amid the splendour of celebrations. “It is not the grandeur of the celebration or the ostentatious displays that truly matter,” he reminded, “but the spirit behind each light that is kindled.”
Dr. Ali encouraged Guyanese to let the message of Diwali guide their lives and strengthen national unity. He expressed hope that the Festival of Lights would inspire everyone “to banish the darkness of hatred and division and let compassion, tolerance, and unity guide our nation forward.”
“May the light of Diwali continue to shine brightly over our beloved Guyana,” the President concluded.
