Yesterday, Hon. Sonia Parag, Minister of Education, visited potential locations in Region Six to assess spaces that could be used as classrooms for students eligible for the University of Guyana (UG) medical school who cannot be accommodated at the Turkeyen Campus.
Minister Parag, accompanied by Advisor on Education Reform Dr. Kofi Dalrymple and Regional Executive Officer Narindra Persaud, highlighted UG’s Tain, Berbice campus as meeting the academic and logistical standards necessary for the programme.
In September, Ministers Parag and Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Health, met with Vice Chancellor Dr. Paloma Mohamed and UG representatives to discuss expanding and decentralizing medical studies. The initiative aligns with a commitment by President Dr. Irfaan Ali to address the growing number of qualified students unable to access the main campus.
The expansion will initially target Regions Two, Three, and Six and aims to help bridge labour gaps in the health sector, which now includes six new hospitals and upcoming specialty facilities.
