Health hub and golf course planned for Silica City as Housing Ministry, GFC advance sustainable development

Plans for a modern Health Hub and Golf Course are among the key features being explored for Silica City as the Ministry of Housing and Water, through the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), deepens its collaboration with the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) to ensure sustainable urban development.

During a joint site visit yesterday, led by Minister within the Ministry, Hon. Vanessa Benn, officials from both agencies assessed areas earmarked for these facilities, which are intended to support Silica City’s long-term vision of environmental balance and community well-being.

According to the press statement, CH&PA’s Chief Development Planner, Ms. Germene Stewart, explained that the initiative forms part of efforts to ensure Silica City’s design embraces sustainability and enhances the natural environment.

GFC Commissioner, Mr. Edward Goberdhan, noted that the partnership will promote preservation, as well as, the wider use of local timber in housing construction.

CH&PA Senior Engineer, Mr. Randolph Hunte, added that the collaboration will help foster partnerships with timber suppliers and support the regulation of timber prices for the national housing programme.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ryan Dey of the GFC highlighted the Commission’s role in tree tagging and creating community-friendly green spaces where families can thrive.

Also participating in the visit were Ravin Singh, Director of Projects, Policy and Public Affairs at the Office of the First Lady; CH&PA Surveyor, Shaquille Mayers; and other technical staff.

The partnership aligns with the Government’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) and reinforces its commitment to sustainable, people-centered urban growth through the development of Guyana’s first smart and green city.
