President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has confirmed that the Aubrey Barker to Ogle Highway connection will be completed before the end of 2025, marking a major step in Georgetown’s expanding transport network.
The four-lane highway links South Ruimveldt’s Aubrey Barker Road to the Ogle–Eccles corridor and is part of a series of interlinked routes designed to improve travel between Georgetown, the East Bank, and the East Coast of Demerara. During a site inspection on Tuesday, President Ali said the project is in its final stages, with only minor engineering adjustments remaining.
“Before the end of the year, this section from Ogle all the way to the Mandela roundabout will be completed, giving us another four lanes of interconnection,” he stated.
The new roadway forms part of a broader traffic management and urban development plan that will eventually create up to 12 interconnected lanes from Ogle to Mandela Avenue, linking directly to the Eccles–Mandela four-lane road and the Ogle–Eccles highway. The project aims to reduce congestion and enable smoother traffic flow across the Demerara corridor.
The highway is expected to improve access for residents and businesses in Cummings Lodge, Sophia, and South Ruimveldt, while supporting new housing and industrial development. President Ali also noted that work continues on the Ogle to Enmore four-lane expansion, which will open thousands of acres for commercial, manufacturing, and residential use along the East Coast.
The Aubrey Barker–Ogle connection is part of the government’s wider infrastructure modernization program to enhance connectivity, cut travel times, and promote urban growth throughout the Demerara region.
