Ninth Convocation marks new era for Creative Arts in Guyana

The Institute of Creative Arts (ICA) celebrated its ninth convocation on Tuesday, marking the first graduation since the institution received official registration from the National Accreditation Council in 2024.

This milestone ensures that certificates in Dance, Visual Art, Music, and Theatre Arts and Drama are now recognized internationally at certificate, diploma, and degree levels.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson, delivering the feature address, described the accreditation as a transformative achievement that elevates Guyana’s creative professionals to global standards.

He emphasized that graduates now possess the credibility to pursue opportunities both locally and abroad.

Minister Ramson also outlined initiatives to strengthen the arts sector, including the integration of ICA students and alumni into national cultural events, the development of community-based performance spaces, and the construction of a world-class museum and art gallery to permanently showcase the work of Guyanese visual artists.

He announced that the upcoming 50th anniversary of the E.R. Burrowes School of Art will feature a national exhibition displaying works by current students and past graduates.

The ICA, which comprises the National School of Dance, E.R. Burrowes School of Art, National School of Music, and Guyana National School of Theatre Arts and Drama, has long been central to Guyana’s artistic development.

With its new accreditation and government support, stakeholders say the institution is poised to drive a renaissance in the country’s creative economy.

This convocation, many observers noted, not only celebrated the accomplishments of its graduates but also marked a new chapter in Guyana’s cultural identity.
