The United Nations Security Council has approved a significant expansion of its security mission in Haiti, more than doubling the size of the 15-month-old force aimed at combating armed gangs. The mission will also be renamed a “gang suppression force.”
The proposal, introduced by the United States and Panama, received 13 votes in favor. Russia, China, and Pakistan abstained.
The decision comes amid reports of record displacement caused by gang violence across Haiti, highlighting the urgent need for increased security and operational capacity.
The mission has been underfunded and understaffed since its inception. (Reuters)
