Education Minister Sonia Parag has raised concerns over what she called “alarming levels of teacher absenteeism” across schools, warning that students are being deprived of the education they deserve.

Since the start of the new school term, Minister Parag has been conducting unannounced classroom visits. She described some of her findings as deeply troubling: at one school, 12 teachers have not reported to work, while in another, she walked into a classroom where students were asleep, waiting for a teacher who never arrived.

“This cannot continue,” Parag said in an interview on Monday. “If you don’t have teachers in the classroom teaching, then the child doesn’t learn. It’s as simple as that.”

The Minister emphasized that accountability goes beyond mere attendance, stating that teachers must also ensure the quality of lessons delivered and the impact those lessons have on students’ learning.

“You are moulding the minds of young children into adulthood. I am asking teachers to show up for their children, not just because it’s your job, but because it is one of the most important things you will ever do in your life,” she appealed.

Parag also pledged support for teachers who are committed to their duty, promising strengthened support systems to help educators perform effectively in classrooms.

“I will give you all of my support to be able to build and develop the education sector in Guyana,” she assured.

With teacher absenteeism now under the spotlight, the Minister said corrective measures will be implemented as part of the government’s ongoing push to ensure that every child has access to consistent, quality education.
