On Sunday evening, the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) marked its 60th anniversary with a historic gala, inducting six legends of the sport into the newly established Squash Hall of Fame.

The event was part of a three-day weekend that brought together multiple generations of athletes, including many who returned from abroad to pay tribute to the community that shaped their formative years in squash.

The Hall of Fame was established through the Guyana Squash Archival Project (GSAP), a committee tasked with chronologically documenting and permanently archiving the history of squash in Guyana while preserving the sport’s legacy.

Six outstanding players were honored and inducted into the Class of 2025 Squash Hall of Fame, earning permanent recognition on the wall at the National Racket Center. The inductees are Ron Hughes, Mike Watkinson, Madhu Wellingkar, Josephine Whitehead, Carl Ince and Nicolette Fernandes.

In addition, Dennis Dias received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his over 50 years of contributions to the squash community.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Charles S. Ramson, remarked that the Hall of Fame serves as both recognition of legends and a catalyst to inspire future talent. “Icons unlock the door of talent development,” Minister Ramson said, emphasizing that all sporting disciplines should consider establishing their own version of a Hall of Fame.

The evening celebrated the rich history of squash in Guyana while inspiring the next generation of athletes to continue the sport’s legacy.
