Two dead, one injured in Soesdyke-Linden Highway accident

Two men were killed and another seriously injured in an accident on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, in the vicinity of Loo Creek, around midnight today.

The crash involved a motor pickup (#PAE 6499), driven by 54-year-old Chinese national Da Tai Lei of Lethem, and a parked motor lorry (#GAH 5391), which had been left on the highway by its driver, 31-year-old Liston Marcus of Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Da Tai Lei and one of his passengers, 87-year-old Edward Singh of Lethem, were pronounced dead on arrival at the Linden Hospital Complex. Another passenger, 41-year-old Chinese national Wen Wu Lei, was admitted in serious condition.

Police said the lorry had been parked on the western side of the highway around 22:50 hrs after reportedly developing mechanical problems. It was left facing north, without reflectors or warning devices to alert other road users. The pickup, which was heading north at a fast rate, slammed into the rear of the lorry.

The victims were pulled from the wreck by police and public-spirited citizens before being rushed to hospital. The bodies of the deceased are at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, pending post-mortem examinations.

Marcus, the lorry driver, is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
