Ten youth-friendly spaces to be opened for children, teens this year

Ten new youth-friendly spaces will be opened this year as part of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security’s expanded juvenile and teen support programmes, Minister Dr Vindhya Persaud announced on Wednesday.

Speaking in a message to mark Child Protection Week 2025, Dr Persaud said the initiative will ensure children and adolescents across more regions of Guyana have safe spaces to access counselling, mentorship, and other opportunities for their mental and physical development.

“We’ve already opened those in Regions Three, Four, Five, Six, and Ten. We’re also making sure that children themselves are part of this journey, through our regular school and community outreaches,” she explained.

The minister stressed that protecting children requires more than laws and policies. “It’s about each of us stepping up to notice, listen, and to act when a child is in need. They need guidance, respect, and encouragement,” she said.

She highlighted parenting programmes as another key initiative, equipping families with the tools needed to raise children in safe and supportive environments.

“As we observe Child Protection Week, let us remember that keeping children safe is not just the job of government, it is the responsibility of all of us, every person in each community and region. A safe child is a happy child, and a happy child grows into a strong adult who will build a better nation,” Dr Persaud said.

The minister also urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to pledge to speak up against abuse and create nurturing environments for every child. She invited citizens to join the ministry’s child advocacy volunteer network, which will be trained to support a nationwide campaign.

“See it, say it, stop it. Use the power of your voices to report, and together let’s keep every child safe,” she urged.

Child Protection Week 2025 is being observed under the theme, “Every Child Safe.”
