PSC, GCCI back government’s city rescue and digital push

Two of Guyana’s leading private sector groups on Friday endorsed government-led initiatives to modernise the capital, Georgetown, praising efforts to restore the city’s image and improve efficiency through digitisation.

The Private Sector Commission (PSC) commended President Dr. Irfaan Ali for the launch of Project Rescue Georgetown, describing it as “a bold and visionary intervention to restore dignity to our capital city and position Georgetown as a modern, vibrant, and sustainable hub for business, culture, and national pride.”

The PSC said years of neglect and partisan obstruction had left the city with clogged drains, dilapidated markets, and deteriorating roads. “These conditions have not only undermined the quality of life for citizens but have also constrained investment, trade, and the ease of doing business,” it noted.

Project Rescue Georgetown, the PSC said, will focus on waste management, canal rehabilitation, market upgrades, and the restoration of parks and boulevards. “Simple but powerful changes, like taking out the trash, creating safer work environments, and giving our people a beautiful city to live in, will lift morale, sharpen focus, and increase productivity,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) welcomed parallel government measures to boost efficiency through digitisation.

The GCCI noted the planned introduction of electronic identification cards, online passport applications, and decentralisation of the passport process. “The introduction of an online process will provide a time-saving and convenient procedure for citizens, while increasing accessibility of services,” the Chamber said.

It also highlighted the importance of urban renewal, including upgraded drainage networks, heritage preservation, waste management, and biodiversity. “These areas are crucial factors in the creation of an attractive investment and tourism destination,” it added.

Both groups pledged to collaborate with the government to ensure the success of the initiatives.
