GECOM warns against unofficial declaration of results

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has reminded citizens, political parties and observers that it is the only body authorised to declare official results of the September 1 general and regional elections, warning that premature announcements could cause confusion and unrest.

The Commission said the declaration process will unfold in stages, beginning with sub-district tallies in Districts Three, Four and Five, followed by constituency-level declarations from Returning Officers in all 10 geographic regions. The final national results will be issued by GECOM, determining the composition of the National Assembly and the Regional Democratic Councils.

GECOM stressed the need for patience and calm as the process continues, urging the public not to rely on unofficial pronouncements or figures. “Unofficial declarations or premature celebrations can lead to misinformation and potential unrest,” the Commission said.

The body noted that its tiered approach is mandated under the Representation of the People Act and is designed to ensure meticulous verification and transparency.

Political parties, their supporters and the wider public were urged to respect the process and direct any concerns through official channels.
