The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has strongly condemned the circulation of a fake Statement of Poll (SOP), which was published online just one minute after the official close of polls.
In a statement, the Commission stressed that it would have been impossible for any ballot counting to have commenced at that time. GECOM described the incident as a “despicable act,” designed to create a false impression of electoral success for the political party linked to the Facebook page Team Mohammed.
“This can only be seen as an attempt to mislead the public and to fabricate legitimacy where none exists,” the Commission noted.
GECOM reiterated its appeal to all stakeholders, urging them to rely only on the official results issued through two channels, namely the official Statements of Poll published on GECOM’s website and the formal declarations made by supernumerary returning officers, returning officers, and ultimately by the Commission itself at the national level.
The electoral body confirmed that the matter of the fake publication will be handed over to the Guyana Police Force for investigation.
“GECOM once again emphasises that only results officially released by the Commission should be considered valid. Any attempt to misinform or mislead the electorate undermines the credibility of the process and will not be tolerated,” the statement concluded.
