President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday suggested citizens could receive another cash grant before the end of the year, signalling possible financial relief as the country heads into elections on September 1.

Speaking at a People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) community meeting in Eccles, East Bank Demerara, Ali dropped the hint.

“I heard PM told them next year is the next grant. If you behave yourself you get it this year,” he joked, drawing laughter and applause from supporters.

The President offered no details on the amount or timing but hinted at a “beautiful Christmas,” fuelling expectations of a holiday boost. The government last year began distributing $100,000 grants to more than 600,000 adult citizens, with payments continuing into early 2025.

Beyond immediate cash relief, Ali highlighted his administration’s long-term focus on education and human capital. He said Guyana was building a “knowledge economy” with expanded scholarships, new seats in medicine and engineering at the University of Guyana, financial literacy programmes and training for small business owners.

“We have to build those seats and diversify the delivery of education in communities across the country,” he said.

Ali added that foreign investors were showing confidence in Guyana because “they trust our government, they trust our policies, they trust our leadership.”

Ali also addressed social challenges, urging citizens to confront domestic violence after a recent killing in Georgetown in which a man fatally shot his wife, injured their 10-year-old son and then killed himself.

“We owe it to this child and so many others… to secure a country in which families must find the joy in living together,” Ali said.

He called for stronger personal responsibility, empathy and action against abuse. “It requires each one of us to make a stronger commitment to doing better,” he added.

The child, now hospitalised in critical condition, has received nationwide support. Ali urged citizens to keep him in their prayers as he begins “the long journey toward healing.”
