Three people, including a Venezuelan woman, died on Tuesday in a collision between two lorries on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, police said.

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. near Loo Creek and involved lorry GXX 1546, driven by 73-year-old Lional Campbell of Kuru Kururu Village, and lorry GAG 313, driven by Venezuelan national Carlos Yasmanie, 29.

Police said Yasmanie swerved to avoid a car that braked suddenly in front of him and collided head-on with Campbell’s vehicle. Yasmanie’s lorry caught fire, trapping his female passenger, identified only as “Meli,” who died at the scene.

Campbell and his passenger, whose name has not been released, also died from their injuries. Yasmanie was pulled from the burning lorry by passers-by and taken to Georgetown Public Hospital with a broken leg and other injuries. His condition is listed as stable, police said.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Pensioners’ Mortuary in Linden pending autopsies. An investigation is continuing.
