Ballot boxes safe, but several injured in multi-vehicle collision

Ballot boxes from Berbice were safely delivered to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) headquarters in Georgetown on Friday night despite a traffic accident on the East Coast Demerara public road, police said.

The crash occurred around 20:55 hrs near La Bonne Intention (LBI) and involved three vehicles in the escort convoy: Minibus BAB 6899, Motor Car PXX 7899, and Minibus BAL 2180. Police said the vehicles were carrying ballot boxes DF048 and DF047 from Central Police Station and DF050 from Whim Police Station.

According to investigators, the accident happened when an unidentified car turned north-west out of the LBI Access Road, forcing the lead police escort vehicle to brake suddenly. This triggered a chain collision among the three escort vehicles.

Several passengers were injured and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, while all ballot boxes were subsequently handed over to GECOM “safe and secure,” police said.
