A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Presidential Candidate Aubrey Norton on Tuesday unveiled a housing plan aimed at providing free house lots to Guyanese aged 18 and above earning less than GYD 400,000 per month.
Speaking at a public meeting in Lethem, Region Nine, under the party’s people-centred campaign theme, Norton said the government would prioritise housing for low-income citizens. “One of the things we will do as a government is to ensure that people who earn less than $300,000 to $400,000 a month get a free house lot,” he said. “We commit to ensuring that any Guyanese above the age of 18, an adult, who works for less than $300,000 to $400,000 will get a free house lot,” Norton reiterated.
The APNU has previously announced a rent-to-own housing plan in its manifesto, promising to build homes that will be rented at affordable rates until occupants pay off costs and gain full ownership.
Addressing the Region Nine gathering, Norton described the party’s people empowerment plan as viable and aimed at lifting citizens out of poverty. “When we make these proposals, the first thing the government says is that it can’t happen. When we said we would give cash grants, they said no. They turn around and give it when they recognised they’re in trouble. The President came here and announced a set of things after we would have said it. When we first said we would give pensioners $100,000, he said it’s not possible. He now announced he can give I think $60,000 or $69,000. Our position is clear. We want to put people first. We want to empower you, the people.”
Norton also emphasised education and training for residents of Hinterland regions, saying the party’s development plan will focus on building skills to meet the needs of their communities.
