Healthcare delivery in Region Two has taken a historic leap forward with the commissioning of the $6.6 billion Lima Regional Hospital today. The state-of-the-art facility fulfils a major promise by the government to ensure Essequibians have access to world-class medical care without the burden of travelling to Georgetown.
The hospital is equipped with 75 inpatient beds, two operating theatres, a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Unit, modern laboratory and imaging services, dental and ophthalmology departments, dialysis treatment, and a Neonatal Unit. With its central location, the facility will also serve residents of Region One.

President Dr Irfaan Ali, delivering the feature address, said the hospital represents a revolution in healthcare delivery for Region Two.
He described the Lima facility as a “quantum leap” over existing services, highlighting advanced features such as telemedicine, digitised patient records, and an oxygen plant to ensure uninterrupted supply.
“We are unleashing a revolution that every child will be screened early,” the President said.
Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony noted that the Suddie Hospital lacked the specialised services Essequibians needed, forcing many to seek treatment outside the region. He said the Lima Hospital was built to change that reality.
Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva called the opening “a historic day” for Essequibo, thanking the government for fulfilling its promise of delivering modern, accessible healthcare to the people of Region Two.
