Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn on Wednesday commissioned a new $138 million fire station at Wisroc, Linden, in a move the government said will strengthen firefighting capacity and improve public safety in Region 10.

The Wisroc Fire Station, part of the administration’s security sector upgrade programme, is expected to boost emergency readiness, disaster response and community protection in Linden and surrounding areas.

Accompanying Benn at the ceremony were Permanent Secretary Andre Ally, Deputy Commissioner of Operations Errol Watts, Superintendent Alistair Roberts, Deputy Chief Fire Officer Dwayne Scotland, Divisional Officer of Operations Andrew Holder, EMS Assistant Divisional Officer Clean Thom-Fernandes, and senior officers of the Guyana Fire Service.

The new station includes modern facilities such as a waiting area, offices for senior and subordinate officers, an EMS office and storage room, IT and finance offices, administration and training rooms, a gym, laundry area, a fire prevention office, conference and control rooms, and living quarters for staff.

The station will enhance operational efficiency and allow firefighters to respond more quickly to emergencies. It also provides upgraded accommodations and training facilities for personnel.

The Wisroc Fire Station adds to recent investments in the security sector, including the new Timehri Police Station and the Region 10 Command Operations Centre, which the government says form part of a holistic approach to building a safer and more resilient Guyana.
