The North Ruimveldt Secondary School was officially commissioned today, four years after a devastating fire in June 2021 destroyed large sections of the institution, including science and IT labs, home economics rooms, and Guyana’s first smart classroom.

The reconstruction was carried out by Kares Engineering, with Marcel Gaskin and Associates Limited serving as consultants. Valued at $566.9 million, the three-storey structure is designed to accommodate up to 500 students and is outfitted with modern amenities.

Students will now benefit from fully equipped science laboratories, IT labs, smart classrooms, and dedicated spaces for home management, clothing and textiles, and industrial arts.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, who officially commissioned the facility, said the project represents much more than new infrastructure. “This is about building an ecosystem of positive transformation in the classroom and for the community,” he noted.

Education Minister Priya Manickchand highlighted the significance of the rebuild, describing the school as a symbol of resilience for South Georgetown. “Today, we are proud to present a modern, well-equipped institution that will provide opportunities for every child,” she said.

The commissioning of the rebuilt school not only restores a vital education hub but also signals a renewed focus on resilience, modern learning, and equal access to quality education for students in the surrounding communities.
