APNU makes pitch to Dartmouth residents

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Chief Whip, Christopher Jones, has called on the community of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, to vote resoundingly for the coalition in the September 1 elections.
Speaking at a party rally at Dartmouth last Sunday, Jones told residents that they have a right to access state contracts as citizens of Guyana. He assured that under an APNU government, state contracts — including small contracts — will be distributed equitably.
“When you give these youngsters a contract of $2.5m or $5m or $10 million, after they spend their money to purchase equipment and materials and pay for labour they barely got about a million dollars left back. So in order for them to start over again, the money is so lil bit the only thing they can buy is two spades, a shovel, a wheelbarrow and two black buckets,” Jones related.
Jones also criticised the award of some big contracts, noting that some of the contractors have failed to deliver quality work, and said this will stop if the APNU Government regains power.
He insisted that the government is doing no favours when they issue contracts to young people, as it is not a privilege but a right as a Guyanese citizen.
APNU has pledged a liveable income for every household, including a 35 per cent salary increase for public servants, a $100,000 monthly old-age pension, a $120,000 annual childcare allowance, and a $200,000 minimum wage. It has also promised to raise the tax exemption threshold to $400,000, while providing electricity and water subsidies, and offering support to single parents, vulnerable groups, and businesses.
