Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken on Thursday urged newly promoted ranks of the Guyana Police Force to lead and engage with the public with humility, integrity, and the utmost professionalism.
“This achievement is a direct result of your hard work, discipline, and consistent professionalism during your service in the Guyana Police Force,” Hicken said in a statement addressed to the promoted officers.
The promotions were carried out under the directive of Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Hicken said they followed strictly defined and transparent criteria and form part of the president’s ongoing commitment to building a modern, professional, and responsive police force.
He noted that the promotions are intended not only to fill critical vacancies and improve leadership across the organisation, but also serve as a just reward for years of dedicated service and professionalism.
“Importantly, with promotion comes improved remuneration, allowing ranks to enjoy greater financial stability and comfort, in keeping with their increased responsibilities and contributions to national development,” Hicken said.
He reminded the officers that they are role models to their fellow comrades and ambassadors of the force to the broader community.
Quoting leadership author John C. Maxwell, Hicken said: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
To those who were not promoted, Hicken offered words of encouragement: “Do not be discouraged. Your dedication and service are recognised and valued.” He added that promotion is influenced by many factors, including available vacancies, performance, and conduct.
“The strength of this force lies not only in its leadership but in the collective effort of every rank,” Hicken said.
