Body of missing fisherman recovered; boat captain in custody

Alleged wounding at Best Village, West Coast Demerara

The body of 22-year-old fisherman Tamesh Takurdin was recovered on Wednesday afternoon at the mouth of the No. 65 Channel, hours after the fishing boat he was in reportedly capsized off the Corentyne coast.

Takurdin, of No. 65 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, had been missing since around 16:10 hrs when the boat, carrying him and three other fishermen, overturned. He reportedly fell overboard and disappeared beneath the water.

Residents later discovered his body at approximately 17:45 hrs. Froth was observed coming from his nose and mouth, but no marks of violence were found during a preliminary examination. The body was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. It is currently at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The captain of the boat, Ramesh Chunilall, has since been arrested and is in custody at the No. 51 Police Station, assisting with the investigation.
