Nirav Persaud Sukdeo, a 25-year-old man from Lancaster Village, Berbice, was on Wednesday sentenced to three years and two months in prison for causing the death of his girlfriend, Bibi Aleah Ali.
Sukdeo was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving under Section 35(1) of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02. The incident occurred on July 22, 2024, and claimed the life of 18-year-old Ali, a medical technologist.
He made his first court appearance on September 18, 2024, at the No. 51 Magistrate’s Court and was released on $300,000 bail. The trial began on January 8, 2025, and concluded on July 30, with testimony from seven prosecution witnesses. Sukdeo was remanded after the guilty verdict.
He was sentenced during a virtual court appearance today.
The case has added to growing concerns over dangerous driving in Guyana, where speeding remains among the leading causes of road.
