GECOM urges vigilance amid rise in fake news ahead of election

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Wednesday warned of a rise in fake news and misinformation ahead of the country’s General and Regional Elections scheduled for September 1, 2025.

In a statement, the electoral body called on the public to be alert to false narratives spreading across traditional and social media platforms, saying such content threatens to erode public trust and undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

“Disinformation campaigns can sow confusion, erode confidence in democratic institutions, and potentially deter voter participation,” GECOM said.

The Commission urged voters, political parties, civil society groups, and media outlets to treat GECOM as the only credible source of election-related information. It said it would continue to disseminate accurate and timely updates via its website, official press releases, and verified social media accounts.

The public was advised to verify all election-related information against GECOM’s official statements before sharing it.

“GECOM is committed to ensuring a free, fair, and transparent electoral process,” the Commission said.

GECOM also appealed to Guyanese citizens to apply critical thinking and rely on trustworthy sources, warning that misinformation could undermine the outcome of the September 1 vote.
