Young Officer Cadet makes history as first woman to gain prestigious Sandhurst selection Eighteen-year-old Officer Cadet Fianna Maria Tading has made history as the first woman in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to be selected for training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. Tading, who is five months into the GDF’s Standard Officer Course #58 earned the opportunity through her excellent performance during the rigorous officer training programme. For the young cadet, the historic achievement represents both a personal milestone and an important step towards her goal of becoming a military officer. “The opportunity was unexpected, but I am extremely grateful. I see it as an important step towards becoming a military officer. I intend to give my best, learn as much as I can and return better prepared to serve the GDF and share what I have learnt,” she said. Originally from Moruca, Region One (Barima-Waini), and now living at Strathspey, East Coast Demerara, Tading attended Bladen Hall Multilateral School. She says her decision to pursue a military career was influenced by a teacher who recognised her potential and encouraged her to apply for the Standard Officer Course. Tading said her determination is also shaped by her upbringing and her desire to create better opportunities for herself and her sisters. “Life was a bit tough for us growing up, and I always wanted a better future for myself and my sisters. When I learnt how challenging the officer course was, I decided that it was a challenge I wanted to take on,” she said. As she prepares for the next stage of her military development in the United Kingdom, Tading hopes her achievement will inspire more young Guyanese, especially women, to consider serving in the GDF. She encouraged young people who are willing to work hard to challenge themselves and serve Guyana by considering a career in the GDF.

The Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) has welcomed the recent Executive Orders by the United States Government reducing the reciprocal tariff rate on Guyanese exports from 38 per cent to 15 per cent.
The GMSA in a statement expressed appreciation to the Government of Guyana for its engagement and representation during the negotiation process.
It said discussions remain ongoing and voiced support for continued diplomatic and trade efforts to secure further reductions.
The association said it remains committed to advocating for the interests of local manufacturers and service providers and will continue working with national and international partners to unlock new trade opportunities.
The BBC reported that Canadian imports will face tariffs as high as 35 per cent, among the highest announced. Thailand, which had been slated for a 36 per cent tariff, will now face a reduced 19 per cent duty, aligning it with regional peers such as Indonesia and the Philippines.
Mexico has been granted an additional 90 days to conclude a trade agreement, while Taiwan faces a 20 per cent tariff. It remains unclear whether its semiconductor sector will be subject to additional sector-specific levies.
Tariff rates go as high as 50 per cent on some goods, signalling a major escalation in the administration’s global trade strategy.
