Twenty-five-year-old Niraz Sukdeo of Lancaster Village, Corentyne, was on Wednesday found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with a July 2024 crash that claimed the life of his 18-year-old wife, Bibi Aleah Ali.

Sukdeo appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court, where the verdict was delivered.

Following the ruling, he was taken into custody and remanded to prison pending sentencing, which is set for next Wednesday.

The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday, July 22, 2024, around 2:10 am, along the Kiltearn Public Road in Corentyne, Berbice.

According to initial police reports, Sukdeo was driving motorcar PAF 6330—allegedly at a fast rate—when he lost control and collided with a crane parked on the parapet. The vehicle veered into a nearby canal.

Both Sukdeo and Ali, who were reportedly both employed as Medical Technologists, sustained injuries.

However, Ali was thrown from the vehicle upon impact and landed in the canal.

She was later pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon Public Hospital. Sukdeo was hospitalised at Anamayah Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries.

Police had launched a full investigation into the crash, which concluded with Sukdeo being charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

The sentencing next week will determine the legal consequences for Sukdeo following his conviction.
