Another 11 orphanages are set to benefit from the launch of First Lady Arya Ali’s fourth phase of the Adopt-an-Orphanage Initiative, launched on Friday at the Baridi Benab at State House.
Speaking at the launch, the First Lady reminisced on the first phase of the initiative back in 2021, which she noted was in response to a request by an orphanage for greater support.
She expressed appreciation for the support from sponsors thus far, noting that with support from the private sector, over $100 million has been invested into orphanages.
This, she explained, means that on average, about $25 million is being invested in the lives of the children who live in these homes each year.
“Over the 12months, 11 orphanages will be sponsored by private companies represented here today. This sponsorship will primarily cover their utilities and some other monthly expenses,” the First Lady related.
“We were able to make significant investments in orphanages. We built homes for underprivileged families, provided hundreds of scholarships to young women from the hinterland, distributed sanitary pads to more than 30,000 school-aged girls, directly employed more than one hundred persons with disabilities and so much more,” she stated.
Apart from the monthly utilities, Ali said, repairs and maintenance are also conducted by contractors, as well as the sponsorship of health services and school supplies.
“These kinds of investments are aimed at ensuring that we have not just improved the place of dwelling for children, but we’re inspiring dreams,” she noted.
Addressing sponsors, she said it is a testament in the belief in the children’s potential and dedication to their success.
She shared that the government will continue to provide support to these “homes” and has already discussed plans to do so through its annual subvention.
“My office is also working along with the government to assist caregivers, to assist by having them included in the part-time job programme so it can complement or supplement their income,” Ali added.
The eleven orphanages, the First Lady highlighted, represent an increase by two compared to last year.
She told sponsors that together, they’re assisting in building a system in Guyana where every child knows that they are valued.
