Grandmaster (GM) Samy Shoker is on a three-day visit to Guyana as part of a promotional tour from July 23-25, 2025. He is being hosted by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) and will showcase his skills in a Simultaneous Chess Exhibition against some of Guyana’s best and strongest players. This exciting event will take place at Giftland Mall today. GM Samy will also deliver a lecture for registered participants on Friday.
Grandmaster Samy began his chess journey at the remarkable age of four. Born in France, he has travelled extensively to promote the sport, including several years living in Egypt. He has represented Egypt in numerous prestigious international tournaments, including the Chess Olympiad. Widely respected for his dynamic playing style, GM Samy is also known for his exceptional coaching and teaching abilities. He combines modern tools and a charismatic personality to promote chess globally.
GM Samy holds a Master’s degree in French Literature from La Sorbonne University in France and is a member of the Texas Tech University Chess Program in the United States. He has served as a primary school teacher in French Guiana, Egypt, and Uzbekistan, and has also taught History at the high school level in Noumea, New Caledonia.
In addition to his chess accomplishments, GM Samy is a chessboxer—a true hybrid athlete. Chessboxing is a unique sport that combines the intellectual strategy of chess with the physical intensity of boxing. Competitors alternate between rounds of chess and boxing, and a match can be won by checkmate, time forfeit, or knockout.
