A 30-year-old taxi driver from No.78 Village, Corentyne, Berbice is now in police custody after confessing to his involvement in an alleged robbery under arms. He has since handed over the firearm used in the crime.
On Sunday, July 20, around 4:00 pm, Detective Corporal Austin of the Springlands Police Station Criminal Investigation Department (CID) interviewed Amzad Ally, also known as “Cow.” The suspect, a Guyanese male of Indian descent, reportedly admitted that he had been hired by two men, known only as “Parks” and “Turtle,” to transport them to No.58 Village to commit a robbery and then pick them up afterward.
During the interview, Ally told the detective, “Sir, meh get something fi tell yo, last night Parks and Turtle hire meh fi drop them off at No.58 Village fi robb them people and to pick them up back, and Parks geh meh a small gun fi stash and meh go and stashed it in meh washing machine under meh house, Sir meh gan carry yo fi de gun.”
Acting on this information, a team of detectives, including Detective Sergeant Fraser, Detective Corporals Austin, George, Mitchell, Corporal Chapman, and Constables Butters and Cadogan, escorted Ally to his residence. There, Ally pointed to a small white washing machine under his house and indicated that the firearm was hidden inside.
A search of the washing machine revealed a suspected .32 pistol along with a magazine containing five live rounds. Ally was immediately informed of the offence, cautioned, and he reportedly replied, “Officer is keep I keeping the gun fi them.”
The area was photographed for evidence. Ally, along with the recovered firearm and ammunition, was taken back to the Springlands Police Station. The weapon and ammunition were secured in the presence of the suspect and lodged with the station sergeant.
The police investigation is ongoing.
