Key gas-to-energy facility undergoes testing ahead of August launch

The Guyana National Control Centre

Construction of the Guyana National Control Centre (GNCC), a central component of the country’s gas-to-energy project, is progressing with testing now underway on several key systems within the facility.

According to information shared by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, testing is being conducted on the power supply, backup generators, security infrastructure, water services, air-conditioning systems and other operational components ahead of commissioning.

The GNCC’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) equipment has arrived in Guyana and is undergoing acceptance testing at Guyana Power and Light’s (GPL) secondary control centre in Sophia.

Once operational, the SCADA system will enhance the monitoring and control of electricity distribution across the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS), allowing GPL to improve grid management and system reliability.

The GNCC is part of Guyana’s gas-to-energy project, one of the country’s largest infrastructure initiatives.

The project will transport natural gas from offshore oilfields to an onshore facility, where it will be used to generate electricity and produce natural gas liquids, including cooking gas.

The government has said the project is expected to cut electricity costs substantially, support industrial development and create jobs.

The Guyana National Control Centre is expected to become fully operational by August 2026, subject to the successful completion of testing and final acceptance procedures.
