Gerald Da Silva, a 55-year-old motorcyclist of Lot 10, Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, lost his life in a tragic accident around 16:05 hrs today on the eastern carriageway of the Covent Garden public road, East Bank Demerara.
The accident involved Motorcycle CL 9379, which Da Silva was riding, and Motor Lorry GAG 2043, driven by 23-year-old Richard Kevin Ghani of Alliance Road, Timehri.
According to police enquiries, both vehicles were proceeding south—Da Silva along the western driving lane and the lorry a short distance behind in the eastern lane. It is alleged by the lorry driver that as Da Silva approached a motor canter parked at the side of the road in front of him, he swerved eastward to avoid it. The lorry driver said he applied brakes to avoid a collision, but due to the short braking distance, the right front side of the lorry collided with the motorcycle.
As a result, Da Silva and his motorcycle fell onto the road surface. The right front and rear wheels of the lorry rolled over him, causing severe crushing injuries to his head and other parts of his body.
Police ranks escorted his motionless body to the Diamond Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. The body was later taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
