A sea of colours floods Umana Yana

The streets around the Umana Yana transformed into a vibrant canvas of democracy yesterday as thousands of political party supporters flooded the area in a bold show of loyalty and strength for Nomination Day 2025. With flags flying high, chants echoing across the seawall, and coordinated marches arriving from every direction, the atmosphere was electric—symbolising not just a step in the electoral process, but the beginning of a spirited campaign season.

Leading the charge was the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), whose signature red dominated the crowd. From early morning, supporters—some arriving in decorated vehicles, others on foot—gathered in massive numbers, waving flags, singing party anthems, and declaring their confidence in continuity and development. Their unified presence stretched along the Kingston coastline, forming a striking river of red that pulsed with movement and purpose.

On the other side, supporters of the APNU coalition brought a strong and organised showing, dressed in green and yellow. Their march was steady and intentional, underscored by powerful chants calling for renewed leadership and accountability. Supporters carried banners that spoke to the coalition’s campaign message, while youth groups led drumlines and cheers that added rhythm and energy to their presence.

Adding to the colourful spectacle were the gold shirts of the Alliance For Change (AFC), who positioned themselves prominently near the nomination centre. Their supporters were vocal and pointed in their calls for transparency, especially as some raised concerns about perceived issues with the order of submissions to GECOM. Though smaller in turnout, their voices carried far.

Smaller parties like the Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) and the Forward Guyana Movement made their presence known in blue and purple, respectively. Their supporters may not have matched the numbers of the major parties, but they brought a bold and determined spirit, using every opportunity to wave flags, chant their slogans, and showcase alternative visions for Guyana’s future.

In total, five political parties submitted their candidate lists today. And while the legal and procedural aspects of Nomination Day are crucial, it was the show of people power—through colour, sound, and movement—that gave the day its true energy.

With nominations now complete, attention turns to the campaign trail, where today’s visual show of support may offer an early glimpse into the momentum building across party lines. If Nomination Day is any indication, Guyana is heading into a competitive and high-energy election season where every voice and every colour will matter.
