Young Guyanese Trained in Robotics Through Government Tech Programme

Young innovators in Guyana are gaining early exposure to cutting-edge technology through a robotics training programme led by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. Targeting individuals aged 18 to 30, the initiative is open to those with a diploma in computer science, electrical or mechanical engineering, or at least two years of CAPE-level science education.

Launched in 2024 with 50 participants, the programme has already trained over 100 young people and aims to double that number by the end of 2025. The training—considered advanced or level three robotics—combines online and in-person sessions. Participants are taught to programme and assemble robots, wire electrical systems, manage battery setups, and troubleshoot real-world challenges.

First-year participant Darren Chand said the course deepened his passion for robotics and engineering.

“My CS teacher told me about it… I’ve always been interested in engineering and programming. It was a mix of online and in-person interaction… the teamwork… you get to learn everyone’s perspective… Robotics would be a very useful skill in the employment and job markets,” he said.

Second-year trainee Tomika Wallace, a Queen’s College graduate, called the programme empowering.

“What inspired me was seeing the robotics course… it’s more hands-on. While doing it, I fell in love with the idea of robotics… It was very informational and educational, fun and exciting to have that direct, hands-on approach,” she shared.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., said the initiative is part of a broader effort to equip youth for a modern, tech-driven Guyana.

“You said to yourself, actually, I like this. I want to explore this more… with that curiosity and willingness to challenge yourself, that’s how you’re going to develop your own careers,” he told students.

The Minister added that beyond skills training, the programme encourages self-discovery and confidence.

“We’re asking you to do this because this is a pioneering programme. Nobody else is doing it. We want to invest in you—because you found it interesting and wanted to take it further. In doing so, you’re inspiring other young people who may not even know they’re interested in this field yet.”

As demand grows globally for digital skills, the Ministry sees this initiative not just as education—but as a launchpad for Guyana’s future tech leaders.
