A 29-year-old woman from Albouystown is in police custody after allegedly attempting to smuggle SIM cards into the Camp Street Prison.
The suspect, identified as Shevaghn Samuels of 11 Hogg Street, was arrested around 9:15 a.m. on Monday during a routine inspection of items she brought for an inmate, identified as Ray Smith.
According to police, prison officers discovered nine SIM cards concealed inside a tube of Colgate toothpaste during the search. Samuels was immediately detained and later handed over to the police. She is expected to be charged and appear in court shortly.
In the wake of the incident, Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot issued a stern warning to the public, stressing that attempts to smuggle contraband into prisons endanger the safety of both staff and inmates and undermine the overall security of correctional facilities.
Authorities are reminding the public that smuggling prohibited items into a prison is a criminal offense punishable by law.
