The Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) has expanded into the health sciences through a new partnership with India-based medical training institute, Medvarsity. The two institutions officially launched the initiative today, with support from the Ministry of Health.

In his keynote address, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony said the partnership is part of a broader effort to upskill and reskill Guyana’s medical workforce. He noted that the Ministry had already begun upgrading the capabilities of nurses, doctors, and technicians, and that Medvarsity’s extensive offerings would accelerate that process.

“We have been working on training more nurses, doctors, technicians—and when we saw the programmes already on the platform, we thought this would be excellent in terms of us being able to quickly upskill our people,” Minister Anthony said.

He added that the health sector is evolving, with more professionals seeking training in specialized areas such as critical care. With six new hospitals expected to be operational by the end of August—and another six within the next two years—the Minister said the new training programmes would be essential in preparing staff for these expanded facilities.

GOAL Director Jacob Opadeyi encouraged wide participation in the training, noting that enrollees will initially complete two modules—starting the second immediately after completing the first, with no need to reapply.

So far, 165 medical professionals have registered for the programme, gaining access to 330 courses. Of those participants, 141 are women. Nurses account for 84% of enrolment, while doctors represent the remaining 16%.

Medvarsity CEO Gerald Jaideep welcomed Guyana to the global platform, noting that the institute currently serves learners in over 190 countries. While enrolment for the first batch is now closed, he confirmed that the next cohort will be registered in September.
